Finding the Leak: One Pixel at a Time

You’re peering into a dark, reflective world where depth perception goes to die, guiding a tiny lens on a semi-rigid cable into places my hips and shoulders will never fit again.
But it works.

The bottom of my tank showed a small discolored patch – easy to overlook but just different enough from the surrounding aluminum to make me pause. Diesel leaves marks. Even slow leaks leave stories behind. I checked from a few angles, moved the camera a bit, and there it was: a spot I could reach, a spot that didn’t belong.

Preparing the Tank Surface

JB Weld’s TankWeld is a two-part epoxy that mixes into a putty and cures into the sort of thing Marvel could make a character out of. It’s resistant to fuel, water, temperature changes, and vibration – meaning it’s perfect for a tank repair that won’t see you again for a long time.
Steps:
- Pinch off a piece and knead it like you’re trying to remember how Play-Doh works.
- Once the color is uniform, you’ve got a few minutes of working time. (Let me emphasize a few minutes here, as my curiosity led me to do this step twice).
- Press it firmly over the leak area – really press it in – so it keys into the roughed aluminum.
- Feather the edges to reduce the chance of peeling under vibration.
- Let it cure fully.
TankWeld sets in minutes but reaches full strength after several hours. I let mine sit overnight before rechecking it with the endoscope. There’s nothing gained by rushing the one step that ensures the whole job holds.
Testing the Repair

Once cured, I did what any nervous boat owner does: I hovered. I cleaned the bilge completely, watched for weeping, then let the tank sit for a day to think about how bad it had behaved. Nothing. No new smell. No sheen in the bilge.
And just like that, the boat smelled like a boat again.
